Chennai beat Deccan by 10 runs

Cameron White’s superb 77-run bang gone in vain as Chennai Super Kings dished out a disciplined allround display to cut up a secure 10-run victory over Deccan Chargers in their Indian Premier League here tonight.
Electing to bat, Chennai rode on the contributions of opener F du Plessis (42), Suresh Raina (32) and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (34) to place a difficult 160 for six in their stipulated 20 overs.

The hosts next returned to limit the Chargers to 150 for five to move to the fourth position in the factors table, still five points drifting off table-toppers Delhi Daredevils.

White blasted nine fours and a couple of sixes en route to his third half-century in four innings to keep Deccan in the hunt but the Australian didn’t get as much support from the other end.

Shikhar Dhawan (36) and Daniel Christian (27 not out) were the other two contributors for Deccan.

Chasing 161 to win, the Chargers lost opener Parthiv Patel in the second over when he got an inside edge onto his leg stumps to be bowled for the second consecutive time in the last two matches.

Dhawan and White, however, steadied the innings and stitched together a brisk 68-run partnership in nine over but a lucky break through in the 11th over helped Chennai to put Deccan on the backfoot.

Dwayne Bravo broke the stand when he deflected a straight shot from White, in his own bowling, onto the stumps to find Dhawan short of wicket at the non-strikers end.

Raina then pulled off a stunning return catch in the only over he bowled to dismiss skipper Kumar Sangakkara as Deccan slumped to 85 for three in 12 overs.

With the required runrate hovering over 10 runs per over,Daniel Christian picked up a much-needed six over mid-wicket off Ben Hilfenhaus to bring up the hundred after White completed his half-century with a single in the same over.

My wicket was crucial but we should have got 121, says Ganguly

Pune, May 4: Describing his wicket as the turning point of the match, Pune Warriors captain Sourav Ganguly yesterday said that his side should have overwhelmed the 121-run target set by Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League match here.

Set to chase Mumbai's modest total of 120 for nine, Pune lost wickets at the top, and it took a 47-run fifth-wicket stand between Ganguly (16) and Mithun Manhas (42 not out) to keep the home team in the hunt.

But just when it was time to capitalise on the partnership, Ganguly was cleaned up a brilliant Lasith Malinga in the last ball of the 17th over.

"It was not an easy wicket, the ball did not come on to the bat. But we should have got to 120. We lost a few wickets early. When I got out was the turning point of the game," said a visibly disappointed Ganguly after the match.

Victorious skipper Harbhajan Singh lauded his bowlers and fielders for putting up a gritty display in the face of adversity.

"The pitch was slow, low and it was difficult to play your strokes. We did not expect the pitch to play this way, bowlers would love to bowl here. Our bowlers did a great job," he said.

Good to surrender to subconscious mind while playing, says Sachin

Pune, May 4: Notwithstanding his perfectionist image, Sachin Tendulkar believes that “surrendering” to the subconscious mind while batting can be a good idea.

“It is good to surrender yourself to the subconscious mind (while batting). The conscious mind can sometimes create problems,” he said in an interaction with budding cricketers of a local club here yesterday.

Stating that nobody can be perfect despite best preparation, the master blaster asked the young cricketers not be scared of making mistakes.

“A player has to make mental adjustment and self-belief is important. If you believe in your ability, you can take on any opposition,” he said.

On the temperament needed in T-20 format, he said, “Things depend on the team composition. There is no particular formula. You have to play your assigned role. If you are supposed to hit out and if you get our doing so, you should not regret.”

Asked how much importance the team meetings hold, Sachin said they are desirable to the extent they boost the players’ confidence, but the exercise could be counter-productive if it involves “grilling and raising too many questions”.

“What a sportsman needs is a clear and healthy mind,” he added.

Malinga & Co help Mumbai register one-run win over Pune

Pune, May 3: Mumbai Indians dished out a superlative bowling performance to eke out a one run win over Pune Warriors in a nail-biting Indian Premier League match here today.

Set to defend a modest 120 for nine, Mumbai bowlers rose to the occasion to restrict Pune to 119 for six in their 20 overs, thereby falling short by just a run.

Skipper Harbhajan Singh led from the front picking up two wickets for just 18 runs, while Lasith Malinga (2/25) was as usual at his lethal best towards the death.

Munaf Patel and Pragyan Ojha also did their bid ending up with identical figures of one for 24.

Mithun Manhas scored an unbeaten 42 off 34 balls to keep Pune in the hunt but in the end it was not enough.

Earlier, asked to bowl, Pune produced a clinical bowling and fielding display to restrict Mumbai to the paltry score at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium.

Young Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ashish Nehra shared four wickets between them as Pune bowlers stuck to their task from the onset, barring a few overs in the middle.

Pune bowlers were complemented well by their fielders as they inflicted as many as four run outs.

Sachin Tendulkar top-scored for Mumbai a 35-ball 34 and together with James Franklin (25) added 50 runs for the opening stand, which was the only highlight of the visitors’ innings.

Chasing 121 for win, Robin Uthappa scored a run-a-ball 18 before he fell lbw to Patel.

Chennai look to end losing streak at home

Chennai, May 3: Seeking to end their losing streak at home, Chennai Super Kings will have their task cut out when they take on an improved Deccan Chargers in an Indian Premier League match here tomorrow.

The Super Kings have lost their last two matches at the M A Chidambaram stadium, against Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders, whereas the Chargers are slowly finding their feet with wins over Pune Warriors at both home and away.

While CSK coach Stephen Fleming and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni have been insisting that they have got enough depth in both batting and bowling, that did not reflect in their performance in their last two games. Fleming had commented that it is time his players clicked.

In the initial stages of the tournament, Chennai had South African stars Frau Du Plessis, Albie Morkel and Tamil Nadu’s S Badrinath contributing to the team’s cause.

But Dhoni and Suresh Raina’s lack of form seem to have exposed the chinks in the middle-order. On the other hand, though placed at the bottom of the table, the Chargers’ morale got a boost after wins over Pune.

CSK may appear a better side on paper, but the Chargers have the wherewithal and the combination to beat the struggling hosts.

It is a good opportunity for the Chargers to cash in on Chennai’s poor run at home.

Dhoni, on his part, has done precious little with the bat and his on-field decisions have not yielded the desired results.

Punjab jump to 4th place after 4-wicket win over RCB

Bangalore, May 3: Inspiring bowling by Praveen Kumar and Azhar Mahmood helped Kings XI Punjab pip Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets in a thrilling Indian Premier League match and keep themselves in the play-offs contention, here yesterday.

Praveen bowled a sensational spell after inviting hosts to bat as he gave away just eight runs in his four overs and seasoned Mahmood took three wickets at the expense of just 20 runs to restrict hosts to 158 for five.

Bangalore owed their total to Chris Gayle’s blazing 71 off 42 balls since they were struggling at 59 for one in 10 overs at one stage.

Chasing 159, Punjab had some very anxious moments before crossing the line as they lost Azhar Mahmood (2), skipper David Hussey (45) and Abhishek Nayar (2) through freak run outs in a space of eight balls towards the end to almost give away the win to rivals on the platter.

However, Piyush Chawla struck a six in the penultimate ball of the match to ensure that his side jump to fourth place in the table from a dejecting eighth spot.

Nitin Saini (50 off 36 balls), Mandep Singh (43 off 30) and skipper Hussey batted with sheer determination before the unnecessary run outs.

Saini shared a match-winning partnership of 73 runs for the third wicket with Hussey (45 off 29) to lay foundation for the win.

However, Punjab made it tough for themselves as Mahmood lost wicket in the fourth ball of the 17th over and Hussey and Nayar were out in the 19th over bowled by Zaheer Khan, leaving Punjab to score five off six balls.

Vinay Kumar did not concede a run in the first two balls but Paras Dogra managed a couple off the third to make it three runs off three balls.

It became two off two when Dogra took a single in the next ball and then Piyush Chawla ended supense with a big six.

Now Punjab (-0.280) and Mumbai Indians (-0.187) both have 10 points but the latter are placed third due to better Net Run Rate.

Pray for me, Yuvraj Singh tells his fans

Pune, April 30: Team India star Yuvraj Singh on Sunday appealed to his fans to pray for him so that he could again play for the country and win laurels for India. He was speaking at a function organized by Samriddha Jivan Foundation, which had promised to gift a Tata Manza car to each player of Team India which had won the World Cup. Yuvraj was gifted the car on Sunday.

Thousands of fans congregated at the Navi Sangvi ground to watch their favourite star, who appeared at around 8:30 pm. The fans had been waiting since morning.

The crowd became delirious and pushed forward to have a close look at Yuvraj, who had a tough time alighting from his car.

Addressing his fans, Yuvraj Singh said, I do not have the strength toplay cricket presently. You had been praying for my health and I would appeal to you to continue to pray for me so that I can win laurels for my country.

While delivering his speech, Yuvraj got a call on his cellphone from his mother Shabnam. Yuvraj told the crowd, my mother says, let your live become 'samriddh' (prosperous).

Yuvraj is recovering from a rare germ cell cancer between his lungs. He has come to Pune to cheer up his Pune Warrior team-mates and was seen in good spirits, enjoying his side's IPL match against Deccan Chargers on Thursday.

Yuvraj returned to India earlier this month after treatment in the US for more than two months.

Sehwag, Negi power Delhi Daredevils to their eighth victory

Jaipur, May 1: Virender Sehwag played his trademark punishing knock after little known left-arm spinner Pawan Negi’s brilliant effort with the ball as Delhi Daredevils juggernaut kept on rolling with a thumping six-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in an IPL match, here today. This was Daredevils’ eighth win in 10 matches as they now have 16 points and are assured of a berth in the knock-out stages.

Sehwag blasted 73 off only 38 balls as Daredevils knocked off a target of 142 with as many as 28 balls to spare.

Kevin Pietersen (36, 34 balls, 3x4, 1x6) also ended his IPL campaign on a high as he added 96 for the second wicket with Sehwag who smashed 12 boundaries and a six.

This was after young Negi had a career-best haul of four for 18 as he ran through the Royals top and middle-order after Rahul Dravid (57) and Ajinkya Rahane (42) had added 71 runs in only 8.3 overs.

From 71 for no loss, Royals slumped to 95 for five and their hopes of posting a sizeable total were dashed.

The Daredevils innings began on a disappointing note when Mehela Jayawardene (0) was trapped leg before by Ankit Chavan off the thid delivery but there was no stopping Sehwag.

He started off with a couple of boundaries off Pankaj Singh and then launched into Chavan hitting him for three boundaries. The Nawab of Najafgarh punished each and every Rajasthan bowler as he reached his 50 off 21 balls. It was his fifth consecutive half century--- a record in this format. It came with a slashed six over third man off Pankaj’s bowling.

Sehwag treated the bowlers with disdain and shots all around the wicket really confused Royals bowlers as to which length they should bowl.

By the time Pietersen departed, the duo had added 96 runs and the match was in Daredevils’ pocket. Sehwag continued with his boundary hitting spree and was out with only 11 required for a win.

Chennai Beat Delhi

Sangakkara onslaught ensures 13-run win for Chargers

Cuttack, May 1: Skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White’s brutal hitting at the death proved to be the decisive factor as Deccan Chargers defeated Pune Warriors by 13 runs in their Indian Premier League match, here today.Chasing a stiff target of 187, the visitors could manage 173 for five after Sangakkara (82; 52b, 10x4 2x6) and White (74; 45b, 4x4 4x6) bludgeoned the Pune bowlers to score 95 runs in the last six overs.Sangakkara’s partnership of 157 for the third wicket with White, which is incidentally the highest third-wicket stand in the history of IPL, ensured that home team post a massive total.
The key was the 18th and 19th over of the Chargers innings when Sangakkara and White took 25 runs each to consolidate their position. It was 40-year-old Pune skipper Sourav Ganguly who was clobbered for 25 runs in the 18th over which changed the complexion of the match.

In reply, the Warriors lost Manish Pandey with nothing on the board in the very first ball of the innings, but Sourav Ganguly (45 off 40) and Clarke (41 off 31) kept alive the visiting team’s chances by scoring at a brisk pace.

Steven Smith top-scored for the visitors with a well-made 47 off 27 balls but his effort went in-vain.

But before his arrival, it was the duo of Ganguly and Clarke that dominated the proceedings.

The two played some breathtaking shots during their 90-run stand for the second wicket but Ganguly was also guilty of playing too many dot balls which increased the pressure.

One of the world’s premier fast bowlers, Steyn was hit for two successive boundaries by Ganguly on either side of the wicket but he was unusually subdued against his statemate Veer Pratap Singh whom he couldn’t hit for boundaries.

That was not all as Steyn leaked 17 runs in his next over. Ganguly launched the assault by hitting the pacer over cover in his trademark style and after that, Clarke collected three fours—one over square-leg and two through point—to put the pressure back on the Chargers.

Royal Challengers hope to return to winning ways

Bangalore, May 1: Dropped to the fifth position from third in the points table, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) would look to return to winning ways against an improving Kings XI Punjab here tomorrow to brighten up their play-off chances in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League. The loss against Kolkata Knight Riders by 47 runs in their last game notwithstanding, RCB would look to draw inspiration from the five-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab in the last encounter between the two sides at Mohali. But RCB will have to fight tooth and nail against Kings XI to conjure up a win at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

It has been a mixed outing for RCB so far in the tournament, winning four games and losing as many from nine outings with one match against Chennai Super Kings being washed out.

RCB’s foreign recruits—Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and to some extent Tillakartane Dilshan—have played stellar roles in the victories, but the form of its domestic players has been a major worry for the Bangalore outfit.

Gayle and de Villiers have been at their devastating best with the bat, but find themselves waging a lonely battle time and again because of the lack of support from domestic players.

Virat Kohli, Saurabh Tiwary, Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara all have failed to contribute with the bat so far, thereby putting extra pressure on the foreign players, especially Gayle to do the bulk of the scoring.

After showing great promise in Australia, Kohli has failed to live up to his reputation, scoring just 147 runs from eight innings with only one half century against his name.

But the young Delhi batsman would be desperate to turn things around and strike form in tomorrow’s match.

RCB would look a completely different side and be more formidable if Kohli gets among runs, which would also boost the confidence of Tiwary, Agarwal, Pujara and others.

Rajasthan Royals low on morale

Jaipur, Apr 30: A low-on-morale Rajasthan Royals will be looking to make amends when they take on the formidable Delhi Daredevils just 48 hours after losing a close away game, in their Indian Premier League match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium here tomorrow.Rajasthan would be eager to put behind the disappointment of last night’s defeat when the Daredevils pulled off a dramatic one-run win from the jaws of defeat. The Royals needed to score just 15 runs in the last two overs but Morne Morkel’s penultimate over completely changed the complexion of the match as he gave away just three runs, picking up the wicket of Brad Hodge to turn the tables.
Although the hosts would be hoping for a change of fortunes in their own den tomorrow, the Royals would have to battle it out not just against a strong Delhi outfit in the field but also have to overcome the psychological barrier.

The Royals have lost three matches on the trot and will be looking at Australia’s prolific all-rounder Shane Watson, who would be joining the squad tomorrow, to boost up the morale of the side and put it back on the winning track.

Skipper Rahul Dravid had earlier said that the arrival of Watson would lend balance to the side as he was the mainstay of the Royals’ triumph in the first edition of the IPL. Watson, in all probability, would be opening the innings along with in-form Ajinkya Rahane and Rajasthan would expect the two to give them a solid start.

Dravid, who scored a quick-fire 40 last night, may just come down the order to provide solidarity to the middle order.

Brad Hodge, Owais Shah and Ashok Menaria, though have been inconsistent with the bat in the middle overs, and would look to get their act together.

Kolkata knight rider, CSK come face to face for first time in IPL 5

Chennai, Apr 29: A cracker of a contest is on the cards when in-form Kolkata Knight Riders take on faltering defending champions Chennai Super Kings in their 10th preliminary league match of the IPL here tomorrow. Both the teams are meeting this season for the first time and the Gautam Gambhir-led KKR hold the advantage after having won five of their nine matches so far.Comparatively, Chennai are faltering because of their batting woes and lost by seven runs to tournament laggards Kings XI Punjab yesterday.

Gambhir has been leading from the front and his batting this season in particular has been spectacular. The manner in which he tamed the Royal Challengers Bangalore at home yesterday with a 51-ball 93 was intimidating sight for any opposition bowler.

Same cannot be said about CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been under the mat for months now. His personal contribution with the bat for both the national side and now for the Super Kings has been below par.

Dhoni has failed miserably so far aggregating 132 in eight innings with a high of 40 as compared to Gambhir’s 302 from eight innings with a highest of 93.

Yesterday’s loss to Kings XI Punjab was a classic example of the hosts failure to overcome pressure despite openers Faf Du Plessies and S Badrinath setting the base scoring at over nine in the first six overs.

With the wicket being slow and low, it is not possible for KKR to repeat their feat of posting high totals but the in-form batsmen under Gambhir have proven records to their credit to stitch good partnerships.

Gambhir misses century but stars in Kolkata's big win

Kolkata, Apr 29: Skipper Gautam Gambhir led from front with a rollicking 93 as Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore by 47 runs in their Indian Premier League match, here today.Gambhir bulldozed the Bangalore bowling with his blazing 51-ball knock as Kolkata posted an imposing 190 for four, their highest total of the season, and then restricted Bangalore to 143 for six.Apart from Gambhir, Brendon McCullum (43 off 37) and Jacques Kallis (41 off 27) contributed in their huge score.

Gambhir played some breath-taking shots in his innings, which was studded with five huge sixes and nine fours.

Bangalore wilted under pressure of big chase and lost three top-order batsman inside six overs. They just played a catch job from there on with Chris Gayle holding one end.

Gayle was top scorer for Bangalore with his 86 off 58 balls but his fiery knock came too late. His knock was adorned with six sixes and seven fours.

Had fellow West Indian Sunil Narine not dropped Gayle in the third over, the visitors could have suffered worse defeat. Gayle was on 12 at that time.

With this win Kolkata stay on second position in the points table behind Delhi Daredevils but now have 11 points, two better than Chennai Super Kings and RCB.

Bangalore needed a good start by they lost Tillakaratane Dilshan (1), Virat Kohli (18) and AB de villiers (0) in a hurry and were ousted from the game.

Earlier, everything went right for Kolkata, from winning the toss to a good start and then a good finish.

Gambhir and Brendon McCullum put on 95 runs for the opening wicket, their highest first-wicket stand of the season, to lay foundation of a big score. Gambhir also added 80 with Kallis for the second wicket.

Kings XI Punjab hold their nerves to beat CSK by 7 runs

Chennai, Apr 28: Underdogs Kings XI Punjab scored an upset seven-run victory over defending champions Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League match, here today.Defending a target of 157, Punjab bowlers led by all-rounder Azhar Mahmood held their own at the death as they restricted the much-vaunted CSK batting line-up to 149 for eight, at MA Chidambaram Stadium.Chennai stay put on nine points from as many matches while KXIP are on eight points but occupy the eighth position despite their fourth win.
Credit to Parvinder Awana, Praveen Kumar and Mahmood who bowled the final three overs when CSK needed 39 runs which is considered a gettable target in the shortest format. The three medium pacers bowled a fuller length hardly giving any room to the opposition batsmen who stuttered and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Mahmood played an useful hand at the rear scoring a quickfire 18 off 12 balls and then had impressive figures of three for 25 which also included the prize-scalp of Albie Morkel who was accounted in the first delivery of the final over.

Chennai got off to blistering start with a 47-run opening stand between Subramaniam Badrinath and Faf du Plessis in 5.3 overs. In-form Du Plessis made 29 off 20 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes while Badrinath’s 18-ball 25 consisted of four boundaries.

Both set the tone for the chase before Du Plessis was caught and bowled by Mahmood. Mahmood dismissed Badrinath in his second spell when the batsman was caught at the square leg boundary.

The dismissal of Badrinath in the eighth over dried up runs for the defending champions. Suresh Raina (15) and Wriddhiman Saha (6) found the going tough against KXIP’s spin and pace duo of Piyush Chawla and Awana.

Clarke looks to make IPL impact under Ganguly

Roseau, Apr 28: Michael Clarke headed for his first stint in the Indian Premier League on Friday, insisting that he was looking forward to playing under former India skipper Sourav Ganguly. Clarke masterminded Australia's 2-0 Test series win in the West Indies, taking his record as national team captain since succeeding Ricky Ponting last year to nine wins, three draws and two defeats.
But at the Pune Warriors, he will have to play under Ganguly whose international career featured a number of fierce, competitive clashes with the Australians.

"I think that Sourav's always been a nice guy. I've always got along with him well and I look forward to playing under him," said Clarke, after Australia beat West Indies by 75 runs in the third and final Test.

"It seems like he's doing a really good job as captain-coach over there and I've spoken to a couple of the boys and they seem to be really happy about how things are so for me it's an eye-opener."

Clarke will have to reacquaint himself with the Twenty20 cricket in India having already quit the shorter international form of the game to concentrate on his Test and ODI career with Australia.

"I've never been to the IPL. I've said for a long time that when the opportunity comes up and I feel that it's right for me that I'd love to get over there and have a crack and see what it's like," he said.
